Every story is genuinely unique. Memolio doesn't take a pre-written storyline and drop in a name: it creates a completely new narrative from the specific answers and memories you share. Two books about two different grandmothers will tell entirely different stories, in their own voice, with their own moments. That's the point.

The illustrations are AI-generated, using the photos you provide as the visual reference. We use a specialist image model tuned for consistency and warmth across a whole book, not just one striking image.

We're honest about this because it shapes what the product is: the illustrations are better than most people expect, and they're unique to your family. They're not replacements for commissioned portraits, but they're a world away from the generic clip-art inside most personalised books.

A commissioned illustrated book, where a human artist paints every page from your photos and writes a story from scratch, would cost several thousand euros. Most families can't justify that, which means most grandparent stories never get told in this way.

AI changes that equation. It does the work of the illustrator and the writer, which means we can offer genuine personalisation (a story built from real memories, illustrations based on your family's actual faces) at a price that's within reach for most people. We're not using AI to cut corners. We're using it to make something that wasn't possible before.

The most common buyer is an adult child: a parent who wants to give their children a way to know their grandparent better, or who wants to give their own parent something genuinely meaningful. Gift-givers buying for a milestone birthday, Mother's Day, Father's Day, or Christmas are also a strong fit.

Grandparents themselves sometimes order it too, to sit down and share with their grandchildren right now, or to leave something of themselves behind. If that's you, the form is written so you answer about yourself directly: your own memories, in your own voice.

You don't have to type a single word if you'd rather not. On the web form you can speak your answers instead: just talk, and we turn your voice into text. This works whether you're answering on someone else's behalf or telling your own story.

It works particularly well when you sit down together with the person the book is about. One of you asks the question, the other tells the story, you hold the phone up and record it. Most people find it takes less than half an hour, and it barely feels like filling in a form at all.

Yes. After your book is created, you'll receive a link to a private review page where you can flip through every page and request changes before anything is printed. You can adjust how a character looks, fix a background detail, reorder pages, or edit the text directly.

Every customer gets up to 50 image fix credits, so there's meaningful room to iterate. Only when you're happy do we send it to print.

The whole family can be in the story: grandchildren, children, partner. With a photo we paint them true to life; without one, a few words will do. You only need a photo of the person the book is about.

If you do choose to upload a child's photo, make sure you have the parents' permission first.

The photos you share are used only to generate the illustrations for your specific book. They are stored securely and automatically deleted after a short period; we don't use them to train AI models, and we don't share them with third parties. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.
